About the Malcolm X Library
|
| The
Malcolm X Library offers a vastly updated collection,
purchased during 1999-2003. The librarians are developing
a collection of books which supports K-5 literacy,
curriculum standards in all subject areas, and the
arts. It includes a parent lending library, consisting
of books dealing with effective parenting, donated
by Malcolm X parents. Last year the library circulated
34,000 books among its 400 students. |
Two
certificated librarians, Carol Thorp and Betty Seaton,
assisted by library media technician, Pat Smith, provide
a strong library program for all grade levels. Classroom
visits include story hour and book talks, as well
as development of library research skills in conjunction
with classroom study units. The librarians collaborate
with the teachers, know the children and their reading
interests, and assist them in finding great books
for recreational reading and class assignments.

Malcolm
X students join the community of California young
readers by participating in the California Young Reader
Medal Program which encourages reading among the children
of California. Students read the nominated books in
several catagories: the librarians introduce the books
to the students by reading, doing readers' theater
activities, and by initiating catalog searches using
themes introduced in the books. Students vote for
their favorite books, and authors of the winning books
are given special CYRM medals. |
The Malcolm X Library is a positive force in the overall
learning environment at the school. |
